Which plunger works where?

Use a flange plunger for toilets (the extended rubber makes a seal in the trap) and a cup plunger for sinks/tubs. Set the plunger straight down, create a tight seal, then plunge in short, steady strokes—wild pumping just breaks the seal. If the bowl keeps rising or you suspect a hard object (toy, deodorizer), stop.

Using a toilet auger (without wrecking the bowl)

Place a towel, feed the cable gently, and crank slowly to break the obstruction—don’t muscle it. If you feel rigid, immovable resistance, back off to avoid scratching porcelain or kinking the cable. Flush-test once; repeated cranking can push the clog deeper.

Drain bladders: helpful or harmful?

They can clear certain main-line clogs when used at an outdoor cleanout, but high pressure in old or fragile pipes can cause damage. Never use one inside a fixture trap; you can flood the room. If you’re unsure about your piping or cleanout access, get a camera check first.
